Redbrand cave, wizard’s workshop. Rurik’s loud armor alerted the Redbrands to their presence. Rurik, Andur, and Romaney are inside the workshop room, Hjoldur is still in the main cave. There appear to be two Redbrands in the hallway.

The cave creature is a four-legged, one-eyed creature. He says that this is the last time he’ll let us pass without another sacrifce. Andur wouldn’t mind killing it.

Timeline

The Wake of Umbra

The team brought Umbra’s body back to the Stonehill Inn and rests. The proprietor [name?] greets them in the morning and offers to host a wake for Umbra.

Many townspeople come to the wake, plus two adventurers. Sister [name] of the Shine of Tymora leads the ceremony. The wake is interrupted by a wizard known only to the townsfolk as “Glass Staff”, who creates a portal behind the casket, tosses out the body of Aranthir, and creates a blast of fire that roasts the sister’s face and sets the inn on fire.

Combat: Stonehill Inn

The team starts to escort townsfolk from the burning building. The first person gets captured by Redbrand ruffians lying in wait. Andur and Hjoldur attempt to rescue the person, but Andur gets ambushed by Redbrands attempting to chain him. Rurik kills one of Andur’s assailants, and the other one [runs away?]. Romaney notices that not everyone made it out of the inn safely, so she and Rurik start moving people outside to safety. Hjoldur fights the two assailants of the townsperson. One of them stops to fight so that the other one can escape, dragging their victim. The Redbrand has better luck, so Hjoldur disengages and helps move people to safety and stabilizes the victims. Andur chases the remaining Redbrands about 100 feet. One of them threatens to kill the townsperson they hold captive, so Andur has no choice but to let them go.

Hospital at Alderleaf Farm

To tend to the wounded, the town sets up a temporary hospital at Alderleaf Farm. The team also goes there to stay the night, since their lodging has been destroyed. Rurik asks people for information about “Glass Staff”. He also performs Lay on Hands to provide healing for townsfolk. In the morning, he heals Sister [name], who has been badly wounded due to her proximity to the blast, but she’s not up for blessing the team that day. Somewhere around this point is where Andur and Hjoldur agree to formally join the party. Andur feels endebted to Umbra (from his help in the Redbrand prison), so he wants to take up Umbra’s cause. However, the team forgot that Ubra’s cause was actually killing goblins, so they just chuckled and said it was killing Redbrands or something. This is also where Hjoldur properly intruduces himself as a cleric of Valkur. He shares his story of how he was rejected by his clan for being a runt, which led him to be self-reliant, which has something to do with Valkur. Besides that, Hjoldur is just a stand-up guy who wants to help the town, which is what one would expect from a cleric, so he agrees to join the party. Holdur has a Holy Symbol of Valkur, which is a circle with seven stars:

Redbrand Cave, Part 1

The team goes to the mouth of the Redbrand Cave and see two ruffians go inside the door. Rurik attempts to open the locked door, and then tries to break down the door, but it appears to be sealed with Magic. They check the basement door a level up, but it is sealed the same way.

Shenanigans at Sleeping Giant Inn

The team schemes to find information at the Sleeping Giant Inn. Romaney, a bard, poses as a skilled musician to get past the Redbrand ruffians on the front porch. She plays some music of varying quality and eavesdrops between sets. She also chats with the proprietor, Grista, a dwarven woman. Meanwhile, Andur dresses in a Redbrand cloak to disguise himself as a drunk Redbrand. He stumbles into the kitchen door, to be kicked out by Grista. He then goes through the front door and hears a ruffian say that they have written the password down so as to not forget it. Andur successfully pickpockets the ruffian as he stumbles to the bar. Andur and Romaney leave the inn without incident. Andor shares the password:

Redbrand Cave, Part 2

The team returns to the Redbrand Cave and successfully use the password to enter the door, which shuts behind them. The cave dweller, which the team has assumed to be a giant spider, tells them they can pass one more time based on their previous “sacrifce”. Andur suggests the cave dweller could be killed, especially since he’s being very threatening. Rurik responds that that would be against his principles unless the creature actually attacked someone. However, they both attempt to get a better look at the creature, and see a four-legged, one-eyed creature scurrying at the bottom of the ravine. Rurik explores the hallway on the near side, which leads to a dead-end and definitely does not have any trap doors or secret entrances. As he explores, Andur hears at least two Redbrand ruffians in the center room, where they were playing a card game in the previous encounter. One of them lost money in a card game and can’t afford to go drinking at the Sleeping Giant Inn. Andur finds the wizard’s workshop at the other end of the cave. Romaney searches through the books and papers for information, but only finds formulas for potions and related diagrams. Some works are indecipherable to her, as they were not written in either Common or Infernal. Rurik attempts to sneak past the ruffian room, but his loud armor alerts the Redbrands to their presence. Rurik, Andur, and Romaney are stuck inside the workshop room, and Hjoldur is still in the main cave. There appear to be two Redbrands in the hallway.
